Trail Ridge Road
Travel on Trail Ridge Road once, and you'll be sure to agree that it's one of the most spectacular drives in the world!
Trail Ridge has the distinction of being the highest continuously paved road in the United States, rising to 12,183 feet above sea level. There are spectacular views in every direction, as you cross the Continental Divide and rise to breathtaking heights.
Trail Ridge Road opened in the summer of 1932, after six arduous years of construction that included unforgiving terrain, harsh weather, and limited construction months . The project was a collaboration between the National Park Service and the agency that's now the Federal Highway Administration. With a relatively gentle grade, curves designed to blend in with the landscape, and ample pullouts, Trail Ridge Road stands as a testament to American engineering and perseverance.
The drive from Grand Lake to Estes Park is 46 miles, virtually all of which are inside Rocky Mountain National Park.
Please note: Even though Rocky Mountain National Park is open 365 days of the year, Trail Ridge Road closes for the winter, typically from mid-October through mid-May. Also, even after Trail Ridge has opened for the season, bad weather can sometimes close it for several hours or several days.
